When you need to register
You must register for VAT if your taxable turnover in the last 12 months has gone over £90,000, or you expect it to in the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily, which can make sense if most of your customers are VAT registered. We will look at your figures and advise which route suits you.
Specialist VAT
Some sectors have VAT rules of their own. We advise on:
- Land and property
- International trade
- Partial exemption
- Charities
- Health professionals
- Insurance
- Education providers
- VAT compliance reviews

What is the VAT registration threshold?
The threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling 12-month period. You must register if you go over it, or expect to within the next 30 days.
When are VAT returns due?
Most businesses file quarterly. Each return and payment is normally due one calendar month and seven days after the end of the VAT period.
Do I need Making Tax Digital software for VAT?
Yes. All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns through compatible software. We set this up for you.
